Probably, people before used to do mochitsuki at the end of the year, so that they have enough food without cooking throughout New Year feast period.
From my experience, it is clear that we are gonna have very little mochi left for us after tomorrow's mochitsuki. Since we are not preparing for the coming year anyways, let's make it a cerebration of lots of funs and other good things we have got in this year.
Let's call it a thanksgivingmochitsuki.
